Rolf Groenwold is a professor of Clinical Epidemiology, with a focus on methods for research of medical treatments, at the departments of Clinical Epidemiology and of Biomedical Data Sciences of the LUMC. Together with his research group, he focuses on the development, improvement, and evaluation of methods for observational studies of medical treatments.

Since the start of his research career, Rolf has focused on methods for observational studies of medical treatments. In 2012, he received a VENI research grant and in 2016 a VIDI research grant from the Dutch Research Council (ZonMW). Where the VENI project dealt with statistical methods for dealing with incomparability of treatment groups in medical research (i.e., confounding), the VIDI project extended this work and aimed for developing statistical methods that jointly address different sources of bias in medical research using routinely collected health data (notably, bias due to incomparability, bias due to missing data, and bias due to measurement error). Following the receipt of a personal research fellowship from the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), this work could be extended to focus on methods needed for studies using routinely collected health data (or electronic health records data).

Rolf combines his research into epidemiological methods with many collaborations on various clinical topics.

An overview of his research activities can be found at his ORCID profile
